Kullu Dussehra 2026: How to Visit from Jibhi and Sleep Somewhere Quiet
Do the festival by day in Kullu. Come back to a quiet hillside in Chhet by night.
Journal · Kullu Dussehra · Tirthan Valley
Kullu Dussehra is not a one-evening effigy burning. It is a week-long gathering of village deities in Kullu town, carried down from temples across the valley — and it draws lakhs of visitors. Kullu town fills up fast. If you would rather see the festival and then sleep somewhere calm, staying in the Jibhi–Tirthan side and doing Kullu as a day trip works well.
Kullu Dussehra 2026: dates and venue
- Dates: Wednesday 21 October to Tuesday 27 October 2026 (seven days).[1][2]
- Venue: Dhalpur Maidan (Dhalpur Ground), Kullu town.[2][3]
- Day one: the Rath Yatra of Lord Raghunath opens the festival on 21 October.[3]
- Deities: 347 deities have been invited this year, according to the district administration.[1]
- Extras this year: a drone and laser show and an international cultural/folk programme have been announced;[2] drone shows are reported for the 2nd, 4th and 6th days (22, 24 and 26 October).[3] Cultural evenings, the Dussehra Bazaar, exhibitions and a food court run at Dhalpur Ground.[4]
Note the one-day offset: national calendars put Vijayadashami on 20 October 2026, but the Kullu festival begins on 21 October.[3] Don't plan your Rath Yatra day for the 20th. Schedules can change, so check the official site[5] close to your dates.
Getting from Jibhi to Kullu: the day-trip plan
The usual road runs Jibhi → Banjar → Aut (through the tunnel onto the Chandigarh–Manali highway) → Bhuntar → Kullu. It is roughly 60–70 km, typically about 2 to 2.5 hours each way. On festival days, and on long weekends, it can take much longer.
- Leave early (by 7–8 am) so you reach Dhalpur before the crowds peak.
- Expect parking restrictions near Dhalpur; park where allowed and walk in.
- Carry a warm layer; October evenings get cold quickly in the valley.
- Plan to drive back before it gets late; the Banjar–Jibhi stretch is narrow and dark.
- Honest caveat: traffic jams aren't only a Kullu problem. On the 4 October long weekend, jams were reported on the Banjar–Jibhi road too.[6] Choose weekdays if you can.
Why stay near Jibhi instead of Kullu town
Rooms in Kullu and Manali book up and get pricier during Dussehra, and the town stays busy late into the night. Tirthan Valley is a different pace: forest, river, small villages, and Jalori Pass and Serolsar Lake for your other days. You get the festival and a proper rest.
Where we come in: Peaks N Valley Stays, Chhet

We are a small hillside stay in Chhet, near Jibhi: one Glass House with a private hot tub looking out at the valley, and two Mudhouses. We're pet-friendly, and meals are home-cooked Himachali food. The caretaker's wife makes Siddu fresh. After a day in the Dhalpur crowds, it's quiet here.
Midweek dates during Dussehra are the easiest to get. WhatsApp us on +91 99537 93147 with your dates, number of guests and any pets.
