Jibhi in December: snow chances, quiet New Year
How cold it gets, what the snow odds really are, and how to plan Christmas or New Year in the hills.
Jibhi in December is the start of winter: short, bright, cold days, freezing nights, wood smoke over the villages and far fewer cars than in October. Snow is possible, especially later in the month, but nobody can promise it on your dates. Come for the cold, clear quiet and treat any snow as a bonus.
How cold it gets
Valley guides put Jibhi's December range at roughly -2 to 10°C. Sunny afternoons can feel pleasant; once the sun drops behind the ridge, it gets cold fast, and nights sit at or below freezing. Pack a heavy jacket, thermals, a warm cap, gloves, woollen socks and shoes with grip.
Will it snow?
Maybe. December usually brings the first light snow of the season, more often after mid-month and on the higher ridges around Jibhi, Shoja and Jalori. The heavier, more dependable snow months are January and February. Winters also vary a lot: in the 2025–26 season, the first snowfall that shut Jalori Pass came only on 23 January, according to Amar Ujala. If snow is the whole point of your trip, aim for mid-January to February; if you want a cosy winter break, December works well.
Jalori Pass in December
Jalori Pass (about 3,120 m) on NH-305 closes after heavy snow, and when it shuts it can stay blocked for weeks. After the 23 January 2026 snowfall, it reopened for 4x4 vehicles after 19 days and to regular traffic on 18 February, The Tribune reported. So in December:
- Treat Serolsar Lake and Raghupur Fort as weather-dependent bonuses, not the plan
- Never route your drive over Jalori in winter. Come via Aut and Banjar (NH-305 from the Kullu–Mandi side), which is the normal way to Jibhi
- Check the IMD Shimla forecast and District Kullu notices 24–48 hours before, and ask us the evening before
Christmas and New Year dates
- Christmas: Friday 25 December 2026, so Thu 24 – Sun 27 Dec is a natural long weekend
- New Year: 31 December 2026 is a Thursday and 1 January 2027 a Friday, so Thu 31 Dec – Sun 3 Jan works without much leave
- Mid-December (roughly 7–20 Dec): the quietest, easiest-to-book stretch of winter
- 21 Dec – 3 Jan: the busiest weeks of the winter in Himachal; message early if you want specific dates
If you want New Year in the hills without a party-town crowd, a small valley stay is the point: a slow dinner, a bonfire under clear winter stars (on request, charged extra), and a quiet first morning of 2027. Office holidays differ by state and employer, so check your own calendar.
What you can do
- Village walks around Chhet and Jibhi, and the short walk to Jibhi waterfall
- Chehni Kothi, the old tower temple above Jibhi, on a clear day
- Slow mornings in the sun, tea on the deck, reading, and long Himachali meals; try fresh Siddu on a cold evening
- Winter photography: frosty mornings, snow on the far ridges and very clear night skies
- Skip high-altitude treks and camping; most guides do not recommend them in December
Driving tips for winter
- Jibhi is about 490–530 km from Delhi (11–13 hours). Overnight Delhi–Manali buses drop you at Aut early in the morning; from there it is a local bus or taxi via Banjar
- Finish the mountain stretch before dark; frost and black ice are common on shaded bends in the morning and after sunset
- Carry some cash, a power bank and a torch; ATMs and mobile data can be patchy in the valley
- After fresh snow, roads can be slow, so give yourself extra time. At our cottages, cars drive right up to your door, and parking is free. We share the location pin and current road status on WhatsApp before you leave. See How to reach us
