Jibhi in January: weather, snowfall and is it open?

The coldest, snowiest month, explained honestly: what to expect, how to get in when Jalori is shut, and how to stay warm.

Thinking of Jibhi in January? Here is how cold it gets, when snow is most likely, what happens to Jalori Pass and how to stay warm in a cottage in Chhet.

Short answer: Jibhi in January is the heart of winter: the coldest nights of the year, short sunny days, and the best chance of snow in the valley. Snow is likely at some point in January–February, but nobody can promise it on your exact dates. Jibhi stays open all January; what changes is the road over Jalori Pass.

Jibhi weather in January

  • Nights: the coldest of the year, often below freezing. Frost on shaded paths in the morning is normal.
  • Days: crisp and often sunny between snow spells. Sitting out in the afternoon sun is one of the nicest parts of a January trip.
  • Temperature: colder than December (valley guides put December at roughly -2 to 10°C), so pack for sub-zero nights.
  • January end: still deep winter. Late January into February is when snow is most often reported.

Snowfall in January

January and February are the more reliable snow months around Jibhi, Shoja and Jalori. Winters vary a lot, though: in the 2025–26 season the first snowfall that shut Jalori Pass came only on 23 January 2026, Amar Ujala reported. So if snow is the main reason for your trip, keep your dates flexible and check the forecast a few days out. If it doesn't snow, you still get clear mountain air, empty trails and very quiet nights.

Is Jalori Pass open in January?

Often not. Jalori Pass closes after heavy snow and can stay shut for weeks. After the 23 January 2026 snowfall it reopened for 4x4 vehicles after 19 days and to regular traffic on 18 February, The Tribune reported. That doesn't cut Jibhi off: the normal way in is via Aut and Banjar on NH-305, which doesn't cross the pass. Details: stay near Jalori Pass and how to reach Jibhi and Chhet.

  • Plan your route via Aut and Banjar, never over Jalori, in January.
  • Finish the mountain stretch before dark; black ice forms on shaded bends.
  • Coming by overnight bus? We can help arrange a taxi from Aut (fares vary by dates and advance booking).
  • WhatsApp us the evening before and we'll share current road conditions and the location pin.

Staying warm in a January cottage

Peaks N Valley Stays is in Chhet (PIN 175123), a short drive from Jibhi. Each cottage has a room heater, hot water runs 24x7 and there is power backup if the valley supply drops in bad weather. You can drive right up to the door and park free, which matters a lot when paths are icy. Our in-house local chefs cook warm Himachali food, so you don't need to go out on cold evenings.

For couples, the glass house in Jibhi with a private hot tub is the January stay to pick: glass walls onto a winter valley, a hot tub for two, and room decoration, a cake and a candlelight dinner available on request with 1 day's advance notice. Friends and small families usually take the mud house cottages in Chhet (up to 3 guests each, 6 with both). Planning something special? See honeymoon in Jibhi.
