Jibhi in December: weather, snow chances and quiet days

How cold it gets, what the snow odds really are, and how to plan Christmas or New Year in the hills.

Week by week

December 2026 at a glance

DatesWhat to expect
1–6 DecClear, cold, very quiet. Good for long sunny afternoons and night skies
7–20 DecThe easiest stretch of winter to book; first light snow becomes more likely after mid-month
24–27 DecChristmas long weekend (Christmas is a Friday). Message early
31 Dec – 3 JanNew Year long weekend (Thu to Sun). The busiest week of winter

Staying warm and connected: each of our cottages has a room heater, hot water runs 24x7 and there is power backup if the valley supply drops in bad weather. If you arrive by overnight bus, we help arrange a taxi from Aut (fares vary), so you are not waiting for a local bus in the cold.

Jibhi in December is the start of winter: short, bright, cold days, freezing nights, wood smoke over the villages and far fewer cars than in October. Snow is possible, especially later in the month, but nobody can promise it on your dates. Come for the cold, clear quiet and treat any snow as a bonus.

How cold it gets

Valley guides put Jibhi's December range at roughly -2 to 10°C. Sunny afternoons can feel pleasant; once the sun drops behind the ridge, it gets cold fast, and nights sit at or below freezing. Pack a heavy jacket, thermals, a warm cap, gloves, woollen socks and shoes with grip.

Is Jibhi cold in December? Staying warm

Yes, December in Jibhi is properly cold, especially after sunset and early in the morning. The trick is a warm room to come back to. At our cottages in Chhet, every stay has a room heater, 24x7 hot water and power backup for when the valley supply drops in bad weather.

  • Ask for the heater early: switch it on before sunset so the room is warm when you come in.
  • Layer up indoors too: thermals and woollen socks make evenings far more comfortable.
  • Hot drinks and hot food: our in-house local chefs cook warm Himachali meals, a big help on cold nights.
  • Couples: the Glass House with a private hot tub is made for cold evenings under the stars. Families and friends can pick the Mudhouse cottages, whose thick walls feel snug in winter.

No car? See Kasol to Jibhi without a car or Delhi to Jibhi by bus; we help guests arrange a taxi from Aut.

Will it snow?

Maybe. December usually brings the first light snow of the season, more often after mid-month and on the higher ridges around Jibhi, Shoja and Jalori. The heavier, more dependable snow months are January and February. Winters also vary a lot: in the 2025–26 season, the first snowfall that shut Jalori Pass came only on 23 January, according to Amar Ujala. If snow is the whole point of your trip, aim for mid-January to February; if you want a cosy winter break, December works well.

Jalori Pass in December

Jalori Pass (about 3,120 m) on NH-305 closes after heavy snow, and when it shuts it can stay blocked for weeks. After the 23 January 2026 snowfall, it reopened for 4x4 vehicles after 19 days and to regular traffic on 18 February, The Tribune reported. So in December:

  • Treat Serolsar Lake and Raghupur Fort as weather-dependent bonuses, not the plan
  • Never route your drive over Jalori in winter. Come via Aut and Banjar (NH-305 from the Kullu–Mandi side), which is the normal way to Jibhi
  • Check the IMD Shimla forecast and District Kullu notices 24–48 hours before, and ask us the evening before

Christmas and New Year dates

  • Christmas: Friday 25 December 2026, so Thu 24 – Sun 27 Dec is a natural long weekend. Our Christmas in Jibhi plan covers it day by day
  • New Year: 31 December 2026 is a Thursday and 1 January 2027 a Friday, so Thu 31 Dec – Sun 3 Jan works without much leave
  • Mid-December (roughly 7–20 Dec): the quietest, easiest-to-book stretch of winter
  • 21 Dec – 3 Jan: the busiest weeks of the winter in Himachal; message early if you want specific dates

If you want New Year in the hills without a party-town crowd, a small valley stay is the point: a slow dinner, a bonfire under clear winter stars (on request, charged extra), and a quiet first morning of 2027. Office holidays differ by state and employer, so check your own calendar.

What you can do

  • Village walks around Chhet and Jibhi, and the short walk to Jibhi waterfall
  • Chehni Kothi, the old tower temple above Jibhi, on a clear day
  • Slow mornings in the sun, tea on the deck, reading, and long Himachali meals; try fresh Siddu on a cold evening
  • Winter photography: frosty mornings, snow on the far ridges and very clear night skies
  • Skip high-altitude treks and camping; most guides do not recommend them in December

Driving tips for winter

  • Coming by overnight bus? Our Delhi to Jibhi guide covers the Aut drop and last mile step by step
  • Finish the mountain stretch before dark; frost and black ice are common on shaded bends in the morning and after sunset
  • Carry some cash, a power bank and a torch; ATMs and mobile data can be patchy in the valley
  • After fresh snow, roads can be slow, so give yourself extra time. At our cottages, cars drive right up to your door, and parking is free. We share the location pin and current road status on WhatsApp before you leave. See How to reach us
