What to pack for Jibhi in December–January
A practical winter packing list from Chhet: layers, shoes, kids and pets notes, and what you can leave at home.
Short answer: pack thermals, a mid layer, a windproof outer, warm socks, grip shoes, beanie and gloves. Snow is possible Dec–Feb but never guaranteed. At our cottages you get a room heater, 24×7 hot water, power backup and drive-to-door parking — so leave the portable heater at home.
October–November packing is light layers and a windproof for Jalori. December and January are colder, days are short, and snow is possible but never guaranteed — so the bag changes. This list is for a Chhet / Jibhi stay in mid-winter. For the season picture, see Jibhi in winter; for month detail, Jibhi in December and Jibhi in January. Autumn list: what to pack for October–November.
How cold and snow honesty
Nights in the Banjar–Jibhi belt in December–January are properly cold. Daytime sun on a clear hillside can feel mild; shade and wind do not. Snow may fall in Dec–Feb, especially higher up toward Jalori, but we never promise snow on your dates — treat it as a bonus, not the plan. Official winter notices for the district (District Kullu / IMD-style bulletins when issued) beat social-media “fresh powder” posts.
- Layer for night, not only for the Instagram midday shot.
- Plan the Aut–Banjar route when Jalori is shut — see Delhi to Jibhi by car.
- Short days: pack a headlamp or phone torch for the last stretch and evening paths.

The layering system that works
Think three layers you can add or peel, not one giant jacket you boil in by noon.
- Base: thermal top and bottom (synthetic or merino). Cotton alone against the skin stays damp and cold.
- Mid: fleece or light down / synthetic puffer. One mid you can wear indoors over a thermal covers most evenings.
- Outer: windproof / water-resistant jacket. Rain and wet snow happen; a soft hoodie is not enough on an exposed pass day.
- Legs: jeans or trekking pants over thermals. A second pair of warm socks beats three thin pairs.
- Head and hands: beanie or wool cap, gloves, and a buff / scarf. Ears and fingers go numb first on morning tea outside.
Shoes and wet-ground sense
- Closed shoes with grip for village paths and any frost or mud. Fashion sneakers with smooth soles are miserable on damp stone.
- One pair of warm socks spare in a zip bag — wet socks ruin a day faster than a missing sweater.
- Snow boots? Only if forecasts show fresh snow and you plan to walk in it. Most Dec–Jan visits do not need heavy mountaineering boots; ankle-height hiking shoes with a warm sock usually suffice. We do not sell or rent gear.

What the cottages already provide
Do not overpack appliances. At Peaks N Valley Stays in Chhet every cottage has a room heater, hot water runs 24×7, and there is power backup if the valley supply drops. You can drive to the door and park free. In-house local chefs cook on a menu (ask the evening before for Siddu or a packed lunch). Pets are welcome.
- Skip packing a portable room heater — one is already in the cottage.
- Skip bulky blankets for the car — the cottage is set up for winter nights.
- Do pack your own toiletries and medicines you rely on; Banjar has basic shops, not every brand.
- Couples extras: room decoration, a cake and a candlelight dinner are available on request with 1 day's advance notice.
Kids, pets and small extras
- Kids: an extra thermal set, waterproof outer if you have one, and favourite snacks for the Aut–Banjar stretch. Families usually take the mud house cottages (up to 3 each / 6 both) — car at the door helps with bags.
- Dogs: warm jacket or coat for short-haired pets, towel for muddy paws, and their usual food. More in pet friendly stay in Jibhi and the winter-dog calendar row still to come.
- Work bag: laptop + charger; cottages have Wi-Fi and a work desk (we do not publish a speed figure — signal varies in the hills).
- Hot tub (Glass House): a swimsuit or change of clothes if you plan to use the private hot tub — evenings outdoors still feel cold even when the water is warm.

What not to bring
- No need for a portable heater or electric blanket from home.
- No need to pack as if snow sports are certain — snow may not fall on your dates.
- Leave party heels and open sandals for another trip; paths are uneven and can be damp.
- Do not count on buying a full winter wardrobe in Jibhi market — it is a small strip, not a mall. Pack the core layers from home.
Day trips and one bag note
If Jalori is open, wind on the pass is sharper than in the village — keep the outer layer in the car. Waterfall and village walks need grip shoes more than fashion. For snow chances without promises, see Jibhi snowfall. Couples often base in the romantic glass house in Jibhi (up to 2; the bed sits right beside the glass and the cottage has a glass roof, with a private hot tub). Groups of about 10 can take the whole property — group stay.
