Taking your dog to the hills in winter: a Jibhi checklist
A winter-specific dog checklist from Chhet: packing, the drive, trails honesty, and which cottage fits — not a rewrite of our general pet page.
Short answer: pack a coat for short-haired dogs, towel, usual food and a familiar bed; prefer driving; check temples locally and ask the GHNP range office; all three of our cottages are pet-friendly with room heaters, 24×7 hot water, power backup and drive-to-door parking. Snow is possible Dec–Feb but never guaranteed.
A general pet friendly stay in Jibhi guide covers cottages that welcome dogs. Winter is different. Nights are properly cold, days are short, and snow is possible Dec–Feb but never guaranteed. This checklist is for taking your dog to the Banjar–Jibhi–Chhet belt in mid-winter — packing, the drive, trails and temples honesty, and which cottage fits. For the season picture, see Jibhi in winter; for your own layers, what to pack for December–January.
Why winter with a dog is different
Cold nights matter more for short-haired and small dogs than for you under a room heater. Shade and wind on a hillside walk feel sharper than a sunny Delhi balcony. Short days mean you finish village walks earlier. Snow may fall higher up toward Jalori, but we never promise snow on your dates — treat it as a bonus. Official notices for the district (District Kullu / IMD-style bulletins when issued) beat social-media powder posts. More on snow honesty: Jibhi snowfall.
- Plan for cold evenings even if the midday sun feels mild.
- Keep walks shorter when light drops early.
- Do not book only for snow — Dec–Feb can be dry and clear too.

Packing for the dog
Pack for the dog the way you pack thermals for yourself. The cottage has a room heater and hot water 24×7, so you are not improvising warmth overnight — but outdoors is still cold.
- Coat or jacket for short-haired and small dogs on morning and evening walks.
- Towel for muddy or damp paws before they hit the bed or sofa.
- Usual food for the whole stay — Banjar has basic shops, not every brand.
- Bed or familiar blanket so the dog settles faster in a new room.
- Lead, waste bags, any meds you already use at home.
- Skip packing a portable heater for the room — every cottage already has one, plus power backup if the valley supply drops.
Getting there with a dog
Self-drive is the simplest way to travel with a dog: your timing, stops, and no last-minute operator rules. The usual winter route when Jalori is shut is via Mandi–Aut–Banjar; see Delhi to Jibhi by car and the all-modes guide how to reach Jibhi. Private Volvo overnight to Aut is common for people without a car — bus and taxi pet rules vary by operator, so confirm the evening before; we do not invent a blanket “dogs allowed on every bus” rule.
- Drive preferred when you can — stops for water and a short lead walk are under your control.
- Finish the last stretch in daylight when you can; paths and the final climb feel easier before dark.
- At Peaks N Valley Stays in Chhet you can drive to the door and park free — no long walk from a market parking strip with bags and a dog.

Trails, villages, temples and GHNP
Dogs are common around Jibhi and many village paths are fine on a lead. We do not invent local by-laws. Two honest lines we stick to:
- Temples: check locally; do not take dogs inside temples unless it is clearly allowed.
- Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP): ask the range office before you plan a dog walk inside park boundaries — we do not claim a fixed public rule here.
- Snow or ice on paths: if it has fallen, shorten the walk; grip matters for you and for the dog.
- Other village dogs: keep your dog on a lead near settlements until you know the mood.
Which cottage fits you and the dog
All three cottages at Peaks N Valley Stays are pet-friendly — the Glass House and both Mudhouses.
- Families with a dog: the mud house cottages in Chhet (up to 3 each / 6 both) — car at the door helps with bags, crate and a tired dog.
- Couple + dog: the romantic glass house in Jibhi (up to 2; the bed sits right beside the glass and the cottage has a glass roof, with a private hot tub).
- Group of about 10 + dog(s): take the whole property — group stay.
In-house local chefs cook farm-sourced, home-style food on a reasonably priced menu (we do not publish rates here). Ask the evening before for Siddu or a packed lunch if you want food ready for a day out. Couples extras: room decoration, a cake and a candlelight dinner are available on request with 1 day's advance notice.

Where to stay in Chhet, near Jibhi
A heated cottage you can park beside beats improvising warmth after a long hill drive with a dog. Peaks N Valley Stays is in Chhet (PIN 175123), a few minutes past Jibhi. Every cottage has a room heater, hot water runs 24x7 and there is power backup if the valley supply drops. You can drive right up to the door and park free, our local chefs cook home-style meals, and pets are welcome.
Couples usually pick the glass house in Jibhi: the bed sits right beside the glass and the cottage has a glass roof, with a private hot tub and the valley beside you, for up to 2 guests. Families and friends take the mud house cottages in Chhet, up to 3 guests each or 6 with both, side by side with a shared patio. Can I bring my dog to Jibhi in winter?
Yes — many stays welcome pets, including all three cottages at Peaks N Valley Stays in Chhet. Winter needs extra packing (coat for short-haired dogs, towel, usual food, familiar bed) because nights are cold even when the cottage has a room heater.
What should I pack for my dog for a Jibhi winter trip?
A coat or jacket for short-haired dogs, a towel for muddy paws, their usual food for the whole stay, a familiar bed or blanket, lead, waste bags and any meds. You do not need a portable room heater — cottages here already have heaters, 24x7 hot water and power backup.
Is it easier to drive to Jibhi with a dog?
Self-drive is usually simplest: your stops, your timing. When Jalori is shut, use the Aut–Banjar route. Bus and taxi pet rules vary by operator — confirm before you book. At our cottages you can drive to the door and park free.
Can dogs go on temple visits or into GHNP?
For temples: check locally and do not take dogs inside unless it is allowed. For Great Himalayan National Park, ask the range office — we do not invent a fixed rule.
Which cottage is best with a dog in winter?
Families often prefer the mud house cottages (car at the door). Couples often take the Glass House (up to 2, private hot tub). Groups of about 10 can book the whole property. All three cottages are pet-friendly.
