Delhi to Jibhi by car: route, hatchback tips and parking
An honest self-drive guide from the people at the end of the road in Chhet.
Short answer: drive Delhi → Chandigarh → Mandi → Aut, then turn off before the Aut tunnel towards Banjar and Jibhi. Expect 11–14 hours. A hatchback is usually fine in normal weather if you take the last hill stretch slowly and in daylight; at our cottages in Chhet you can drive right up to the door and park free.
Driving up from Delhi is the most common way our guests reach Chhet, and the questions are always the same: is the road OK for a small car, how long does it really take, and where do I park? This guide is only about the self-drive. For buses, taxis and flights, see Delhi to Jibhi: every way to reach.
Delhi to Jibhi by car route and time
The usual year-round route is Delhi → Chandigarh / Ambala → Kiratpur → Bilaspur → Mandi → Pandoh → Aut → Banjar → Jibhi. Total driving time is often quoted at 11–14 hours depending on stops and traffic, so most people either start very early or break the trip overnight (Chandigarh or Mandi side).
- Chandigarh to Jibhi: roughly 235–280 km, about 7–9 hours with stops — details in Chandigarh to Jibhi.
- At Aut, do not enter the long tunnel towards Kullu. Take the road towards Larji / Banjar along the Tirthan side.
- Aut → Banjar → Jibhi: roughly 28–35 km (Aut → Banjar ~20–25 km, Banjar → Jibhi ~8 km), usually 1–1.5 hours — see Aut to Jibhi.
- Shimla side in the open season: Shimla → Narkanda → Ani → Jalori Pass → Shoja → Jibhi, roughly 150–160 km and 5–6 hours — see Shimla to Jibhi via Jalori.

Can a hatchback make it to Jibhi?
In normal weather, yes for most guests — but drive it like a hill road, not a highway. After Aut the road to Banjar and Jibhi is narrower and slower, with bends and some steep pitches. The Ani to Jalori road is fine for a hatchback in the open season, but its last stretch above Khanag has tight hairpins. What matters more than the car is the driver: low gear, no hurry, and daylight.
- Use engine braking on descents (a lower gear) instead of riding the brakes.
- Horn on blind bends and give way to buses and trucks coming uphill.
- Avoid driving the last stretch after dark on a first visit, especially in winter when days are short.
- Long weekends jam the Aut–Banjar road — midweek arrivals feel calmer.
- After rain or snow, slow down further; in monsoon (roughly July–August) landslides can block the road for hours, so keep buffer time.
We cannot promise the road condition on any given day. Check District Kullu / HP PWD notices for NH-305, or just WhatsApp us the evening before and we will share what we know about the road.
Parking in Jibhi and at your stay
Jibhi market is a small roadside strip, so stopping there is about finding a safe, legal spot rather than a big car park. At Peaks N Valley Stays in Chhet, a few minutes past Jibhi, cars drive right up to the cottage door and parking is free. That matters most with bags, parents, kids or a dog on a cold evening.

Winter driving December to February
- Jalori Pass usually closes with snow in winter; plan the Aut–Banjar route instead.
- Snow is possible but never guaranteed — see Jibhi in winter and Jibhi snowfall.
- We do not promise that a car without chains or 4x4 will get through after fresh snow. If heavy snow is forecast, ask us before you drive; parking lower down and taking a local taxi is sometimes the sensible choice (we can help arrange one; fares vary).
- Short days: aim to finish the Aut–Chhet stretch in daylight.
Fuel, breaks and a few practical notes
- Fill fuel at Aut or Banjar before the last stretch. On the Shimla–Jalori side, fill at Narkanda, Luhri or Ani — there is no fuel above Khanag or at the pass.
- Mobile signal varies along the valley; download offline maps and save our location pin before you leave.
- Travelling with a dog? Stop every 2–3 hours; more in pet friendly stay in Jibhi.
- Driving with parents or kids? Our Jibhi family trip guide covers pacing and what to pack.
