Jibhi or Manali or Kasol? An honest comparison
Same overnight drive from Delhi, three very different trips. Here is which one fits your Dussehra or Diwali break.
Short answer: all three are roughly the same overnight drive from Delhi. Pick Manali for a first Himachal trip with snow points and shopping, Kasol for cafés and treks with friends, and Jibhi if you want forest, a quiet cottage and no traffic jams outside your window. Here is the honest version.
| Jibhi | Manali | Kasol | |
|---|---|---|---|
| From Delhi | ~535 km, 12–13 hrs | ~535 km, 12–14 hrs | ~510–535 km, 12–13 hrs |
| Feel | Quiet villages, forest, wooden houses | Busy town, malls, snow points | Riverside cafés, backpacker scene |
| Oct–Nov highlight | Jalori Pass, Serolsar Lake, Chehni Kothi | Solang, Rohtang (permit) | Parvati river, Manikaran, Kheerganga trek |
| Long weekends | Busy on the main strip; villages calmer | Very busy | Busy |
| Best for | Couples, families, dog parents, slow trips | First Himachal trip, groups | Young groups, trekkers |
Distances: public route guides (jibhi.in, TravelTriangle). Actual times depend on traffic and stops.
Manali: big, easy, busy
Manali has the most hotels, the most things to do and the best-known snow points. In October and November you can usually still drive towards Rohtang Pass, but you need an online vehicle permit from the official Rohtang permit portal, with a daily quota of 1,200 vehicles under National Green Tribunal rules. The pass normally closes for winter around mid to late November, and it varies with the snow each year. The trade-off is crowds: on Dussehra and Diwali long weekends, expect slow traffic in and around town.
Kasol: cafés and the Parvati
Kasol sits on the Parvati river, about 100 km from Jibhi via Bhuntar. It is known for riverside cafés, Manikaran Sahib nearby and the trek to Kheerganga. It suits young groups and trekkers. It is less suited to a quiet couple's break or a dog-friendly stay, and long weekends get crowded.

Jibhi: the slow option
Jibhi is in Banjar, Kullu district, on the road to Jalori Pass. October and November bring clear skies and cold evenings. Days go on easy walks: Jibhi waterfall, the wooden tower at Chehni Kothi, Jalori Pass and Serolsar Lake, and the Great Himalayan National Park side of Tirthan. The main Jibhi strip gets busy on long weekends too, so stay a little away from it.
Can you combine them?
Yes, if you have 5 nights or more. Manali to Jibhi is about 145 km (4–5 hours) via Kullu and the Aut tunnel (jibhi.in). With 2 or 3 nights, pick one place and skip the extra driving.
Dussehra and Diwali 2026
Kullu Dussehra runs 21–27 Oct 2026 at Dhalpur, an easy day trip from Jibhi (our Kullu Dussehra guide). For the Dussehra weekend (16–20 Oct) and the Diwali stretch (6–10 Nov), book early wherever you go. See also Diwali 2026 in Tirthan Valley.

Where we fit in
Peaks N Valley Stays is three cottages in Chhet, a quiet village near Jibhi: a Glass House with a hot tub and two mudhouse cottages. Cars drive right up to the cottage door, parking is free, each cottage has a room heater, hot water is available 24x7 and power backup is available. We cook home-style Himachali food, and Siddu is made fresh on request. Pets are welcome. For the bus, we recommend a private Volvo overnight to Aut (how to reach).

Is Jibhi better than Manali?
Neither is better for everyone. Manali suits a first Himachal trip with snow points, malls and nightlife. Jibhi suits a slower trip: forest walks, Jalori Pass, Chehni Kothi and a quiet stay. The drive from Delhi is about the same, roughly 535 km and 12 to 13 hours, per public route guides.
Is Jibhi far from Manali?
Manali to Jibhi is about 145 km, usually 4 to 5 hours by road via Kullu and the Aut tunnel. Kasol to Jibhi is about 100 km, roughly 3 to 4 hours via Bhuntar.
Is Rohtang Pass open in October and November?
Usually until the snow arrives, typically around mid to late November, but it changes every year. Vehicles need an online permit from the official Rohtang permit portal, with a daily quota set under National Green Tribunal rules. Check the portal a day or two before.
Which is best for Dussehra and Diwali 2026?
Manali and Kasol tend to be busiest on long weekends. If you want the hills without the crowd, Jibhi and Chhet are a calmer pick. Kullu Dussehra (21 to 27 Oct 2026) is a day trip from Jibhi.
Can I bring my dog?
Our cottages in Chhet are pet friendly, and dogs are a common sight around Jibhi. Don't take dogs inside temples unless allowed.
