Jalori Pass: go before winter shuts it
When the pass usually shuts, how to check the road the morning you go, and the Serolsar Lake walk.
Short answer: October and early November are normally inside Jalori Pass's open season, and they are some of the best weeks of the year to go: clear skies, autumn colour in the oak forest and cool, dry trails. But nobody can promise the road on a given date. The pass shuts after heavy snow, and a landslide or rough patch can slow it down even in a good month. Plan the Jalori day as flexible, and check the road the evening before.
Getting there from Jibhi
Jalori Pass sits at about 3,120 m on NH-305, roughly 12–14 km above Jibhi via Shoja, or about 45 minutes by car. From our place in Chhet, the drive up to the pass takes about 1 hour. The road is narrow and climbs on tight hairpins the whole way, with the last few kilometres the roughest. Small cars, SUVs and local taxis manage it; big vehicles do not. Fill fuel at Aut or Banjar on the way into the valley, and leave Jibhi by 8 or 9 AM if you plan to walk to Serolsar.
October vs November
- October: the most dependable month. Crisp mornings, clear views of the ridges and dry trails. Long weekends bring traffic jams on the Banjar–Jibhi stretch, so come midweek if you can
- Early November: still usually open, colder and quieter. In 2025 travellers reported the road open on 11 November, though in rough shape after landslides
- Mid to late November onwards: the usual window for the first heavy snow that shuts the road for winter. Some years it comes much later: in 2025–26 the first closing snowfall only arrived on 23 January, Amar Ujala reported
- Either way, do not plan your trip around seeing snow at the pass in this season
The Serolsar Lake walk

Serolsar Lake (about 3,050–3,100 m) is the reason to make Jalori a full day. The trail starts at the pass and runs roughly 5 km each way through dense oak forest, mostly gentle with a few climbs. Allow 4–6 hours for the round trip, start from the pass by about 10 AM, and be back down before the light goes. Carry water, snacks, a warm layer, a rain shell and shoes with grip; there are small dhabas at the pass but not much on the trail. Staying with us? Our kitchen can pack you a lunch, or fresh Siddu, for the day. Siddu is made fresh on demand, so ask the evening before.
With your dog: guests have walked Serolsar with their dogs. Keep yours on a lead near other walkers, the grazing animals and the temple at the lake, carry enough water for both of you, and pack out any waste.
Short on time? Raghupur Fort goes the other way from the pass: shorter but steeper, about 2–3 hours round trip, with wide views over the ridges.
How to check the road
- 24–48 hours before: look at District Kullu notices for anything on NH-305 (Aut to Jalori) and the IMD Shimla forecast
- The evening before: ask your host or a local driver. People in the valley know the morning's road better than any website. Staying with us? WhatsApp us the evening before and we'll check the Jalori road with locals
- On the day: if there is fresh snow, ice or heavy rain, turn back. Jalori is not worth forcing
If the pass is shut
- Walk the riverside in the Tirthan Valley, a short drive down from Jibhi
- Village walks around Chhet and Jibhi, and the short walk to Jibhi waterfall
- Chehni Kothi, the old tower temple above Jibhi
- See more in our guide to things to do around Chhet and Jibhi
Be a good guest
The valley's tourism association, JVTDA, asks visitors to carry their litter back down, keep the noise low and skip alcohol and drugs on the trails. Serolsar is a sacred lake with the Budhi Nagin temple on its shore, so keep it clean and quiet.
Stay close to the pass
Peaks N Valley Stays is in Chhet, a short drive from Jibhi: a Romantic Glass House for two with a private hot tub and a glass wall onto the valley, and two Mudhouses for up to three guests each. All three are pet-friendly, and our in-house local chefs cook Himachali food with farm-sourced produce. After a long day on the Serolsar trail, ask for fresh Siddu. For the Jalori day we can arrange a local taxi from Chhet to the pass, approximately ₹1,500 each way (subject to change, so we confirm the fare when you book it), and the kitchen can pack lunch or Siddu if you ask the evening before. Come midweek and you skip the long-weekend traffic too.
