Shimla to Jibhi via Jalori Pass

Everyone lists Manali–Leh. This is the shorter, quieter one: apple country, a 3,120 m pass, and a forest descent to our cottages in Chhet.

Short answer: Shimla to Jibhi via Jalori Pass is about 150–160 km and 5–6 hours by car: Shimla → Narkanda → Luhri → Ani → Khanag → Jalori Pass (3,120 m) → Shoja → Jibhi. It is best done by car (there is no through Shimla–Jibhi bus this way; only a few local HRTC buses cross the pass), it is fine in a hatchback, and October–November is the window before snow usually shuts the pass. Our cottages in Chhet are about an hour below the pass, and you can drive right up to the cottage door.

The route at a glance

  • Shimla → Narkanda (about 60 km, NH-5): good highway into apple country. First chai stop.
  • Narkanda → Luhri → Ani: a long winding drop to the Sutlej at Luhri, then a climb to Ani. Fill fuel here at the latest.
  • Ani → Khanag → Jalori Pass (NH-305): narrower, with tight hairpins in the last stretch above Khanag. Slow and steady.
  • Jalori Pass → Shoja → Chhet / Jibhi: the forest descent. About an hour to us in Chhet.

Public guides give 150–165 km and 5–6.5 hours depending on stops and road work. Plan a full day, not a quick dash.

Can you do it in a hatchback?

Yes. The Ani to Jalori road is OK for a hatchback in the open season. Ground clearance is not the issue. Patience is: the road is narrow near the top, so give way on the hairpins, use a low gear going up and coming down, and keep the day's driving in daylight.

When the pass is open

October and November are the sweet spot: clear skies, cold mornings, dry roads. The pass usually closes after heavy snow, typically between December and February, but there is no fixed date. It can open early in a light year or shut for a few days after a single storm. Check District Kullu / HP PWD notices for NH-305, or just WhatsApp us the evening before. We will tell you what we are hearing locally.

Stops worth making

  • Narkanda: apple orchards and the first proper chai break.
  • Jalori top: stretch your legs and take the photo at the sign. With time and energy, the forest walk to Serolsar Lake starts here. See our Jalori Pass and Serolsar Lake guide.

Driving tips

  • Fuel: fill at Narkanda, Luhri or Ani. There is no fuel above Khanag or at the pass.
  • Start early: leave Shimla by 8 AM so you cross the pass by early afternoon.
  • Descend in daylight: on a first visit, avoid coming down the Jibhi side after dark.
  • Weather: after rain or fresh snow, ask before you go. Turning back at Khanag is no shame.

Where to stay at the end

Chhet is about an hour below the pass. Park right at the cottage door, then pick the Glass House or one of the two Mudhouses. You get room heaters, 24x7 hot water and home-cooked Himachali food, and pets are welcome, so bring your dog along.

Roughly 150–160 km, usually 5–6 hours by car without long stops, via Narkanda, Luhri, Ani, Khanag, Jalori Pass and Shoja. Our cottages in Chhet are about an hour below the pass.
