Tirthan Valley cottages: how to choose your stay
Riverside or hillside, glass roof or mud walls: a local guide to picking the right cottage, and what to ask before you pay.
Searching for a cottage in Tirthan Valley? Here is how the riverside, Jibhi and Chhet stays differ, which cottage type suits couples, friends or families, and the questions to ask before you book.
Short answer: Tirthan Valley cottages come in a few clear types: riverside cottages near Gushaini, hillside cottages around Jibhi and Chhet, village homestays, and a handful of special stays like glass-roof cottages and mud houses. Pick by who you travel with, the season, and whether you can drive to the door. Here is how to choose, and what to check before you pay.
Where the cottages actually are
Online, "Tirthan Valley" is used for the whole Banjar area of Kullu district. Strictly, the Tirthan river valley runs towards Gushaini and the Great Himalayan National Park, while Jibhi and Chhet sit on the road up to Jalori Pass. Gushaini is roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road from Jibhi via Banjar. If you are still deciding on the area, read Jibhi vs Tirthan Valley: where to stay first.
- Near Gushaini and the river: the sound of water, trout-river afternoons and the doorway to the national park. Fewer cafés, a wilder feel.
- Around Jibhi: the most stays, cafés and short walks, and the closest base for Jalori Pass and Serolsar Lake. Busier on long weekends.
- Chhet, near Jibhi: a small hillside village a few minutes from the Jibhi market, so evenings are usually calmer, with valley views instead of river views. For the Jibhi-specific riverside vs hillside decision (noise, winter sun, drive-to-door), see riverside or hillside in Jibhi.
Types of cottages in Tirthan Valley
- Riverside cottages: lovely in summer. In winter, riverside spots in the deep valley can get less sun, so ask how many hours of sunlight the cottage gets.
- Glass-roof or glass cottages: made for couples. You watch the sky from bed. Ask about heating, because glass needs a good heater on winter nights.
- Mud house and wooden cottages: cosy, earthy, and good for friends or small families who want their own space.
- Homestays: rooms in a family home, with home food and local advice. Less privacy than a full cottage.
- Camps and tents: fun in the warmer months, but cold from late October onwards.
What to check before you book
- Can you drive to the door? Some stays need a walk or a climb from the road with your bags. In snow or rain this matters a lot.
- Heating and hot water: ask if there is a room heater in every room and whether hot water runs all day.
- Power backup: the valley supply can drop in bad weather. Ask if the stay has backup.
- Food: is there a kitchen on site, or do you have to drive out for every meal?
- Winter route: Jalori Pass can close after heavy snow, so check the stay is reachable via Aut and Banjar. See how to reach Jibhi and Chhet.
- Pets: if your dog is coming, confirm it in writing. See pet friendly stay in Jibhi.
