Tirthan Valley trout fishing: licence, season and rules

What the Himachal Fisheries rules say, when the river is open, and how to plan a fishing morning.

The Tirthan is famous for trout, and also strictly regulated. Here is what you need before you cast, and the months when you simply cannot.

Short answer: the Tirthan river is one of Himachal's designated trout waters: Himachal Tourism lists the Largi to Nagni stretch (about 20 km) for trout angling, and brown trout are what the river is known for. You need a fishing licence from the state Fisheries Department, only artificial fly or spoon baits are allowed, and trout fishing is closed from 1 November to the last day of February every year for breeding. The season reopens on 1 March. Here is how it works, honestly, for a visitor staying near Jibhi.

Is there trout in Tirthan Valley?

Yes. Cold, clear water coming down from the Great Himalayan National Park makes the Tirthan a classic trout stream. Himachal Tourism names Tirthan alongside the Beas, Pabbar, Baspa and Uhl as rivers where rainbow and brown trout thrive. You will also see trout farms and "trout valley" names along the Tirthan side, and many local kitchens serve trout in season.

The rules: licence, bait, season and limits

  • Licence: required for rod-and-line fishing in trout waters, issued by the Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department on a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis. A daily licence is stream-specific. Fees are set by the department; check the current rate with them.
  • Bait: artificial baits only, spoon or fly, in trout waters (HP Fisheries Rules, 2020).
  • Closed season: no trout may be caught from 1 November to the last day of February. Amar Ujala reported the 2026 season opening on the Tirthan on 1 March after the four-month ban.
  • Daily limit: the rules allow a licence holder no more than four trout a day. Many anglers practise catch and release anyway, as Himachal Tourism encourages.
  • No-fishing areas: some stretches are closed, such as near religious places and identified breeding sites. Fishing inside the Great Himalayan National Park's protected areas is not a casual activity; ask the park office.

When is the best time for trout fishing on the Tirthan?

  • March–April: the season opens on 1 March; water is cold and clear before the main snowmelt.
  • May–June: warmer days, snowmelt can colour and raise the river; mornings and evenings are best.
  • July–August: monsoon: high, muddy, dangerous water. Not a fishing season in practice.
  • September–October: the river clears and settles; a lovely time before the 1 November closure.
  • November–February: closed for trout.

If you are planning a December or January trip, enjoy the river for walks and photos, not fishing. Our Jibhi in winter guide has what to do instead.

How to go about it as a visitor

  • Get the licence before you fish; ask the Fisheries Department office in the area or a local angling guide how to get one for your dates.
  • Bring your own fly or spinning gear, or ask local guides whether they can arrange it.
  • Wade only where it is safe: the Tirthan is fast and very cold, and rocks are slick. Never fish alone after rain.
  • Respect private land and village banks; ask before crossing fields.

Not an angler? The river is still the best afternoon

Most of our guests never fish. They sit on the boulders, walk the riverside paths, and look for birds and the odd trout in a still pool. Pair it with a visit to the Great Himalayan National Park side, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014. For a full plan, see the Jibhi itinerary.

Trout on the plate

Trout is a common dish around Tirthan in season, often from local farms. Our local chefs cook home-style Himachali food; ask on WhatsApp what is on the menu for your dates, and see Siddu and Himachali food.

Why the closed season matters

The four-month ban from November to February covers the trout breeding period. Fish lay eggs in clean gravel beds in the cold months, and a few weeks of disturbance can hurt a whole year of fish. The rules also protect identified breeding centres year-round. If you see anyone fishing in the closed season or using nets in trout water, it is against the rules; the Fisheries Department is the place to report it.

Fishing with a family or a dog

Children love watching anglers, but the Tirthan is fast and cold even in good weather. Choose wide, shallow, slow banks, keep children back from the edge and dogs on a lead near the water. Do not let anyone climb on wet boulders. For family-friendly plans in the valley, see Jibhi family trip.
