Where is Jibhi? District, altitude and Tirthan Valley
Straight answers, with the sources behind them, from a stay in Chhet.
Short answer: Jibhi is a village in Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, in the Banjar sub-division, about 8 km above Banjar town on the road to Jalori Pass. Satellite elevation data puts the village at roughly 1,800 m (about 5,900 ft), though guides quote anything from 1,600 m to 2,250 m. It sits on the Pushpabhadra stream, a tributary of the Tirthan, so it is usually counted as part of Tirthan Valley. Peaks N Valley Stays is in Chhet, near Jibhi, with a Glass House for couples and two Mudhouses for families.
People search where is Jibhi for three different reasons: which district it is in, how high it is, and whether it is "in Tirthan Valley". We host guests in Chhet, near Jibhi, and get asked all three every week, so here are straight answers with the sources behind them.
Where is Jibhi? state, district and tehsil
Jibhi is a village in Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. Within the district it falls in the Banjar area: Banjar is one of Kullu's five sub-divisions and also a tehsil, according to the District Kullu administration. Banjar town is the nearest market, about 8 km below Jibhi by road.
Jibhi sits on the road that climbs from Banjar to Jalori Pass (NH-305), with Ghiyagi and Shoja further up the same road. Beyond Jalori the road drops into Ani and the Shimla side, which is why Jibhi can be reached both from the Chandigarh–Manali highway and from Shimla.
- State: Himachal Pradesh
- District: Kullu
- Sub-division and tehsil: Banjar
- Nearest town: Banjar, about 8 km by road
- Road: Aut (on the Chandigarh–Manali highway) to Banjar to Jibhi, or Shimla to Jalori Pass to Jibhi in the open season
Jibhi altitude and why the numbers disagree
Travel guides quote anything from about 1,600 m to about 2,250 m for Jibhi, and we could not find an official figure from the state or district. So we checked two free satellite elevation datasets at the village point marked on OpenStreetMap. Both put Jibhi village at roughly 1,800 m (about 5,900 ft) above sea level.
| Place | Approx. height | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Banjar town | about 1,440 m | Market town and road junction |
| Jibhi village | about 1,800 m | Cafes, cottages, the waterfall |
| Shoja | about 2,500 m | Hamlet on the climb to Jalori |
| Jalori Pass | about 3,120 m | The pass on NH-305, colder and windier |
Approximate heights from Copernicus elevation data (via Open-Meteo) and SRTM 30 m (via OpenTopoData) at OpenStreetMap points, rounded. As a check, the same data gives Jalori Pass within about 25 m of its commonly quoted 3,120 m. Heights change quickly here because the village is spread over a steep slope, so a stay on the road above Jibhi can be a couple of hundred metres higher than the market.
That spread is the main reason the numbers disagree. Some guides measure the lower village by the stream, some quote a hotel higher up, and some seem to have copied the figure for Shoja or another nearby hamlet. If a stay or a trek plan depends on the exact height, treat any single number, including ours, as an estimate.
Is Jibhi higher than Manali?
On the satellite figures above, no. Jibhi village is a little lower than Manali town, which HPTDC lists at about 2,050 m. It is the climb to Shoja and Jalori Pass that takes you higher. In practice the two places feel different for other reasons: Jibhi is in a narrow, forested side valley off the main highway, while Manali is a large town on the Beas.
Around 1,800 m is a moderate height. Altitude sickness is mainly a concern from about 2,500 m upwards, according to CDC guidance, so the village itself is fine for most visitors. Jalori Pass is higher, so go slowly there, and if you have a heart or lung condition, or are travelling with infants or elderly parents, check with your doctor first.

Is Jibhi in Tirthan Valley?
Loosely, yes; strictly, it is on a side stream. At Banjar the road forks. One branch follows the Tirthan river up to Gushaini and the entry points of the Great Himalayan National Park. The other climbs along the Pushpabhadra stream, also called the Jibhi khad, through Jibhi and Shoja towards Jalori Pass.
The Pushpabhadra is a tributary of the Tirthan (Down To Earth; SANDRP lists the Jibhi khad among the Tirthan's main tributaries), and the Tirthan joins the Beas near Larji. So Jibhi is in the Tirthan's catchment, which is why travel sites and stays, including ours, describe it as part of Tirthan Valley. Locals also call the whole area the Banjar valley. If you want to choose between the two branches, our Jibhi vs Tirthan Valley guide compares them.
How to get to Jibhi
- From Delhi or Chandigarh by road: take the Chandigarh–Manali highway to Aut, cross towards Banjar (about 20–25 km), then climb about 8 km to Jibhi. See Delhi to Jibhi: how to reach and Delhi to Jibhi by car.
- From Shimla: over Narkanda, Ani and Jalori Pass when the pass road is open; it usually shuts after the first heavy snow. See Chandigarh to Jibhi.
- By bus: overnight buses from Delhi drop you at Aut on the highway, and from there you take a local bus or taxi up to Jibhi.
- Last stretch: the road above Banjar is narrow and winding. Try to drive it in daylight.
