Jibhi vs Tirthan Valley: where to stay
Easy drive and cafés, or river and national park? Here is how they differ, and how one quiet base in Chhet covers both.
Short answer: pick Jibhi if you want the easiest drive, cafés and short walks; pick Tirthan if you want river days and the edge of the Great Himalayan National Park. Or do what many of our guests do: stay in Chhet, near Jibhi, and day-trip to both.
What people mean by Tirthan Valley
Both sit in Banjar tehsil of Kullu district. Jibhi lies on the road up to Jalori Pass. The Tirthan river valley proper runs towards Gushaini and the national park. Online, "Tirthan Valley" is often used for the whole area, which is why the two get compared so often.
Jibhi: easy and lively

- Simplest to reach by car or bus from Aut
- Most stays, cafés and short walks (Jibhi waterfall, Chehni Kothi)
- Closest base for Jalori Pass and Serolsar Lake
- Can feel busy on long weekends near the main market stretch
Tirthan: river and park
- Trout-river afternoons and village walks
- The doorway to GHNP; core-zone entry needs a permit
- Fewer cafés, a wilder feel
Why a base in Chhet works

Chhet is a small village a short drive from Jibhi, a little away from the main market stretch, so evenings are usually calmer. Gushaini, the Tirthan river village, is roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road via Banjar, and Jalori Pass about an hour (approximate drive times from maps and Himalayan Ecotourism; allow more on busy days). Cars drive right up to our cottage doors, with free parking. Use one stay for everything: a Jalori day, a Jibhi café-and-waterfall day, and a Tirthan river day. Our kitchen can pack lunch or Siddu for day trips, and we check the Jalori road with locals if you WhatsApp us the evening before.
A simple 3-day plan
- Day 1: arrive, Jibhi waterfall, bonfire evening (on request, charged extra)
- Day 2: Jalori Pass and Serolsar Lake with a packed lunch
- Day 3: Tirthan river morning, then head home

Is Jibhi in Tirthan Valley?
Jibhi sits in Banjar tehsil of Kullu district, on the Jalori Pass road. Many people use 'Tirthan Valley' loosely for the whole Banjar area; strictly, the Tirthan river valley lies a little south-east, towards Gushaini and GHNP.
Which is better for a first trip?
If you want an easy drive, cafés and short walks, base near Jibhi. If you want river time and the national park, add a Tirthan day. From Chhet you can do both without changing stays.
Is Jibhi crowded?
The main Jibhi stretch gets busy on long weekends. Chhet is a short drive away from that strip, so evenings are usually calmer than in the market area.
Can I bring my dog?
Yes. Our cottages in Chhet are pet friendly. Dogs are a common sight around Jibhi and village trails are fine. For national park trails, ask the range office what is allowed, and don't take dogs inside temples unless allowed.
