Stargazing in Jibhi: winter night skies from a glass-roof cottage
Verified new-moon dates, the Geminids, what winter skies really show, and how to look up from a warm room in Chhet.
Want to see stars in Jibhi? Go near a new moon, keep a spare night for cloud, switch off every light and give your eyes 20–30 minutes. Here are the 2026–27 dates, the winter meteor showers, and how to make it work from a glass-roof cottage.
Searches for stargazing in Jibhi usually come with one picture in mind: a sky full of stars over the deodars, seen from a warm bed. That can happen here. It also depends on the moon, the clouds and the lights around you, so this guide gives you the verified dates and the honest caveats first, then how to watch the night sky from a glass-roof cottage in Chhet. One note before we start: we do not have our own star photo yet, so the pictures on this page are our cottages at dusk and at night, not the sky.
Is Jibhi good for stargazing? yes, with three conditions
Most people around the world now live under skies brightened by artificial light. The 2016 world atlas of night-sky brightness estimated that more than 80% of the world’s population lives under light-polluted skies and that the Milky Way is hidden from more than a third of humanity (Falchi et al., Science Advances). NASA’s advice is simple: skyglow fades as you move farther from population centres, so heading well away from a city is the key step (NASA Science).
Jibhi and Chhet are small hill villages far from any big city, which is why the sky after dark feels so different from Delhi or Chandigarh. We have not measured the sky brightness at Chhet, so we will not quote a “dark-sky class”. There are village lights, the Jibhi market and the odd vehicle on the road. What matters most on the night is:
- The moon: a bright moon washes out faint stars. The darkest nights are the week or so around each new moon (dates below).
- The clouds: winter weather systems pass through the Western Himalaya every so often. Between them the air can be crisp and clear; during them, expect cloud, rain or snow.
- Your own lights: switch off room lights, keep the phone dim and give your eyes time. This makes a bigger difference than most people expect.
When to go verified new-moon dates for 2026–27
Plan around the new moon and avoid the nights near full moon if stars are the point of the trip. These dates come from timeanddate (2026) and timeanddate (2027), listed for New Delhi; India runs on one time zone (IST), so the dates are the same in Jibhi.
| Month | New moon (darkest nights, IST) | Full moon (brightest, stars wash out) |
|---|---|---|
| Nov 2026 | 9 Nov (12:32 pm) | 24 Nov |
| Dec 2026 | 9 Dec (6:21 am) | 24 Dec (Christmas Eve) |
| Jan 2027 | 8 Jan (1:54 am) | 22 Jan |
| Feb 2027 | 6 Feb (9:26 pm) | 21 Feb |
| Mar 2027 | 8 Mar (2:59 pm) | 22 Mar |
Couples planning around festivals: 24 December 2026 is a full moon, so Christmas Eve will be bright. New Year’s Eve falls a week later, when the moon is about half-lit. If you are picking a Valentine’s-season weekend, the new moon on 6 February 2027 gives darker skies in early February than on the 14th, when the moon is at first quarter (timeanddate). For winter weather and snow chances, read Jibhi in December, Jibhi in January and Jibhi in February.

What you can see in winter, honestly
The bright, dusty core of the Milky Way that you see in most astro-photos is not a winter sight. An astronomer at Lowell Observatory explains that the core is visible from roughly mid-February to October, with the best views from June to August (Smithsonian). On winter evenings you look out towards Orion, away from the crowded centre of our galaxy, so the Milky Way there is much fainter (BBC Sky at Night Magazine). On a dark, moonless, clear night you may still notice a soft band; just do not expect the summer core.
What winter does give you is long nights, crisp constellations such as Orion and Gemini, and two meteor showers:
- Geminids 2026: active 4–17 December, peaking on the night of 13–14 December (NASA). The American Meteor Society notes the moon will be a thin 15% waxing crescent on peak night and that Gemini is well placed from about 10 pm, so this is the best shower of the season to plan around (AMS calendar). NASA lists 40–50 meteors an hour under dark skies; you will see fewer with any cloud or light.
- Quadrantids 2027: active 28 December to 12 January, peaking on 3–4 January. The peak is short, and the AMS predicts it near 3:30 UT on 4 January, which is about 9 am IST, so in India it falls in daylight and rates on the night before will likely be lower (AMS calendar).
- Ursids: a small Christmas-week shower (peak 21–22 December, around 5–10 an hour) with a bright moon in 2026, so treat it as a bonus, not a reason to travel (AMS calendar).
Clear skies? what the winter weather does
Winter weather in the Western Himalaya comes mostly from western disturbances. India’s weather office notes that about 30% of the annual precipitation over Himachal and the north-west Himalayan region falls in winter, mostly from these systems (PIB / IMD). IMD’s forecasting manual describes them arriving every 2–5 days during active spells, with dry spells of one to two weeks at other times (IMD forecasting manual). So clear nights do come, but nobody can promise them for your dates. Check the IMD Shimla forecast and an hourly cloud forecast two or three days out, and keep two or three nights in hand if stars are the main goal. Snow is possible in mid-winter and never guaranteed; see Jibhi snowfall and Jibhi in winter.
From a glass-roof cottage how to actually see more
At our glass house in Jibhi, the bed sits right beside the glass and the cottage has a glass roof, so on a clear night you can look out and up at the sky without stepping into the cold. A few things make it work:
- Lights off, fully. Room lights and screens reflect on glass and hide faint stars. Switch everything off and let the room go dark.
- Give your eyes 20–30 minutes. The US National Park Service says the eye takes 20–30 minutes to adjust to very low light, and white light from a phone or torch resets it; a red light does far less harm (NPS). Turn your phone to its red or night filter.
- Glass is glass. You will see bright stars and planets through it; for the faintest stars, wrap up and step outside for a few minutes, then come back in to the room heater.
- Bonfire first, stars after. A bonfire can be arranged on request at an extra charge, but firelight ruins night vision. Enjoy the fire after dinner, then walk away from it, let the glow fade and look up.
- Warm up after. Every cottage has a room heater, hot water runs 24x7 and there is power backup. The Glass House has a private hot tub for after the cold.

Make it a couples night anniversaries and proposals

Families and groups stars from the Mudhouses
Stargazing is not only for couples. Families and friends take the mud house cottages (up to 3 guests each, 6 with both, side by side). The whole property, Glass House plus both Mudhouses, sleeps 10, which suits a group that wants a quiet night under the sky together; see group stay. Pets are welcome too; keep dogs close after dark on hill paths.
Phone photos set your expectations
- Use night mode, rest the phone on something steady or use a small tripod, and set a short timer so your tap does not shake it.
- Switch off nearby lights, including the cottage lights, before you shoot.
- Phone shots of a winter sky will show bright stars and constellations; the glowing Milky Way core you see online is mostly a summer, long-exposure, dark-site photo.
Safety on cold, dark hill nights
- Do not wander unlit roads or slopes at night. Watch from the cottage, the lawn or the path near the door.
- Dress for real cold in December–February: layers, a cap, gloves and warm socks.
- Carry a small torch for walking, then switch it off once you are settled.

Is Jibhi good for stargazing?
Yes, on clear nights near the new moon. Jibhi and Chhet are small hill villages far from big-city light, so far more stars show than in Delhi or Chandigarh. The moon, cloud and nearby lights still matter, and clear skies are never guaranteed.
When is the best time for stargazing in Jibhi?
The week or so around a new moon. Upcoming new moons (IST, timeanddate): 9 Nov 2026, 9 Dec 2026, 8 Jan 2027, 6 Feb 2027 and 8 Mar 2027. Avoid the nights near full moon, such as 24 Dec 2026 and 22 Jan 2027.
Can you see the Milky Way from Jibhi in winter?
Not the bright core. The core is visible roughly from mid-February to October and is best in June to August. On dark, moonless, clear winter nights you may see a much fainter band near Orion.
When is the Geminid meteor shower in 2026?
The Geminids are active 4 to 17 December 2026 and peak on the night of 13 to 14 December, with only a thin crescent moon. Cloud and nearby lights will lower what you see.
Can I stargaze from the Glass House at Peaks N Valley Stays?
Yes. The bed sits right beside the glass and the cottage has a glass roof, so bright stars show from inside on a clear night. Switch off all lights and give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes. For the faintest stars, step outside for a few minutes, then warm up with the room heater. The Glass House sleeps up to 2.
